P.G.C. Hajenius Cigars, located on the Rokin 82–96, is a Dutch cigar brand, now owned by Scandinavian Tobacco Group. Started in 1826 as a cigar store inside Hotel “De Rijnstroom” on the Warmoesstraat (now demolished), excellent quality and service earned them “purveyor to the court” from many a European royal customer.
In 1914 Hajenius had his own building constructed on the Rokin, designed by the brothers Van Gendt. The outside is done in the “Um 1800” style, while the interior is Art Deco. The new building was named “De Rijnstroom” (as an ode to the hotel were it all started) and has been a Dutch national monument since 2001.
The inside of the store is like a time capsule, completely intact. Well worth a visit!
